Chip Zdarsky has a knack for writing intricate and engaging stories, and his foray into the world of Batman doesn't disappoint. As we sink our teeth into this promising start, it's clear that Zdarsky is weaving together multiple plotlines and themes to create a memorable entry in the Batman mythos. Even if the volume doesn't have the pizazz of Court of Owls.
The Batman ongoing series has always set the bar high when it comes to art, and this current run is no exception. The intricate details, moody color palettes, and dynamic action sequences bring Batman and the new antagonist Failsafe to life, while staying true to the gritty and dark atmosphere that fans have come to expect from the Batman universe. It's always a treat to see talented artists like Jorge Jimenez continue to push the envelope and maintain the high standard that this series is known for.
Zdarsky's track record speaks for itself. With past successes like Daredevil, Spider-Man: Life Story, and a Batman miniseries under his belt, there's no doubt that he has the skills to craft a compelling narrative for Batman. This first story arc gives us a taste of what's to come, offering up a fun and engaging reading experience that keeps us on the edge of our seats.
In this opening chapter, Zdarsky masterfully balances the exploration of Batman's character with a gripping plot that leaves us wanting more. For some that feeling was a negative. To me it's what a first chapter should do.
He delves into the complexities of Batman's relationships with his allies and enemies, while also setting up the groundwork for future plotlines. By connecting various developed plotlines and themes, Zdarsky ensures that fans will be eagerly anticipating each new issue.
As we look forward to the rest of Zdarsky's run, it's safe to say that we can expect more of his signature storytelling style. He's proven time and again that he can create engaging, enjoyable stories that delve into the heart of each character he tackles. With his unique blend of humor, drama, and action, we're confident that Zdarsky's Batman will be a must-read entry in the Dark Knight's canon.
Chip Zdarsky's first Batman story arc has set the stage for what is likely to be a thrilling and memorable run. As we continue to explore the intricacies of Batman's character and witness the unfolding of numerous plotlines, there's no reason to think that Zdarsky will lead us astray.
With that said this arc was heavy on action and implied Zdarsky will be pulling on Grant Morrison's Batman run a lot. That could turn people off.
Score: 8/10.
