Daniel Warren Johnson: I'm Just Saying, I'm Starting to Notice a Formula
Daniel Warren Johnson is a powerhouse in the comic book industry, known for his unique blend of captivating storytelling and mesmerizing artwork. However, as an avid fan, I can't help but feel that Johnson has discovered a writing formula that might be taking away some of the magic from his work. There is an emotional rollercoaster Johnson takes us on in his comics and I wonder if it is a simplistic manipulation of feelings.
There's no denying that Johnson's work has the ability to tug at our heartstrings. His stories often follow a pattern that feels like a perfect recipe for evoking emotions. The formula appears to be similar to what we might find in a television melodrama like Grey's Anatomy, but with themes that have traditionally catered to a male audience, such as wrestling and heavy metal.
Johnson's book "Extremity" doesn't seem to follow the same emotional pattern. Instead, it offers an action-packed world with a captivating story that stands on its own. This deviation begs the question of whether "Extremity" was an intentional break from Johnson's melodramatic emotional formula or simply a story written before he found his niche. Whatever the reason, the book provides a refreshing contrast to his later tear-jerking works. And I found I like it even more after thinking about the low hanging emo fruit he goes after in his more popular books.
The emotional elements in Johnson's comics have clearly resonated with readers, which could be considered a testament to their effectiveness. However, it's also worth considering the potential drawbacks of relying on a formula. As a storyteller, Johnson may risk becoming too predictable, which could lead to reader fatigue or disinterest.
How many more diseases are there to write about? How many more times are friends and family going to die so the main character can find a new strength or maturity?
Daniel Warren Johnson is undeniably a talented comic creator whose work has captured the hearts of fans. His artwork is top notch and he somehow continues to get better.
While his writing formula may have contributed to his success, it's important to consider the potential impact on his future work. Will Johnson continue to explore new and innovative ways to tell stories, or will he rely on the emotional formula that has defined his career thus far? I've enjoyed it all up to this point and he's certainly earned the benefit of the doubt.
I'm just saying I'm starting to notice a pattern.
